Short Shout

Short shout, also called as Kiai (Japanese), Fasheng (Chinese) or Kihap (Korean) is shout or yell that concentrates and releases unified energy during a strike or blow to increase power and focus.

It helps to concentrate mental and emotional energy, putting the practitioner in a state of focused determination.

Short shout also involves proper breathing and the use of deep core muscles, to support the strike. Release the concentrated energy in a quick, sharp, and loud exhalation from the stomach.

There are 3 styles of short shout in martial art:

1. Soldier Style

A loud intimidating shout like soldier in battle. For examples: “HIAA!!”, “HEII!!”, “ORA!!”, “HEAA!!”, “HATA!!”.

2. Monkey Style

A funny small high-pitched sound like a monkey taunts the opponent. For examples: “Huu....”, “Hoo....”, “Haa.....”, “Wata....”.

3. Snake Style

A small sound that blows the wind like a hissing snake. For examples: "Psuh....", "Sih.....", "Suh....", "His...".
