How To Choose Martial Art Style For Beginner

For new recruit students who want to learn martial art with me, i always give them all of my training syllabus tutorials & i tell them to research the basic techniques first. Once they know which 1 fighting style they like, then the training can begin.

If they are still confused, I always ask next question: Is there any hero / idol figure they like from their favorite cartoon - film - game - comic series?

- Japanese Anime - Manga fans are prefer to choose Karate & Kenpo.

- Chinese Wuxia fans are prefer to choose Kungfu & Kuntao.

- American Superhero fans are prefer to choose American Boxing & American Kickboxing.

- European Folk Tale fans are prefer to choose European Boxing & European Kickboxing.

For example is myself as cartoon & video game fans who trained in many martial arts:

1. I started to like & try learning Kenpo in 2009 because my favourite cartoon & game characters are using this martial art. Like Akira Yuki & Lee Diendo.

2. I interested to trying Kickboxing in 2012 because my favourite game characters are using this too. Like Axel Stone & Bryan Fury.

3. I interested to learning Jeet Kune Do in 2017 because my favourite cartoon & game heroes are also using this style. Like Liu Kang, Jacky Bryant, Kenshiro & Forest Law.

But if they are still confused, next i will recommend Punching Style martial arts such as Boxing - Kuntao - Panantukan. Because that fighting style type is the most applicable in everyday life:

1 . Their basic techniques are easy to learned by everyone, there are no high or acrobatic kicks.

2. Can be used when we are attacked at narrow place or when we are wearing a long skirt/dress and cannot do high kicks.

3. Practical for daily life when we want to do cardio aerobic exercise in a small house.

If they are still confused, my final step is recommending Filipino Panantukan. Panantukan is most complete & easiest fighting style for beginner:

1. It have easy punches like Boxing.

2. It have powerful elbows like Kuntao.

3. It also have low kick like Muay Thai, we can use this kick while wearing long skirt / dress.

Panantukan also very popular and often used in various action movies. The untrained artists can mastering it basic techniques fast, easy martial art like Boxing but cooler for cinema because it have low kick.

Southpaw Stance Strikes

Sometimes we need to train all basic strikes using the Southpaw Stance (right foot and right hand placed on the front) for variation in training.

This technique is very helpful when the opponent attacking us from right side and we don’t have time to set up the Regular / Orthodox Stance (left foot and left hand placed on the front).

The method is same as regular basic strikes training (each strikes repeated 10 counts) but now on inverted position. Simple.

Defense Techniques

There are 3 basic defence techniques:

1. Blocking

Use our arms and legs as shield.

2. Trapping

Pinning or redirecting the opponent’s limb.

3. Intercepting

Mix of both offense and defense. When the opponent going strike, we strike first using faster linear technique.
